Feel the Ground: How to Build Power and Mobility Into Your Golf Swing

When golfers talk about improving their swing, you’ll hear a lot of discussion around “feel.”

Feel your tempo.

Feel your rotation.

Feel your sequence.

But one of the most important things to feel — and one that’s rarely trained — is how your body connects with the ground.

Today, Coach Joey D and Coach Josh McCumber break down a simple but powerful drill you can do anywhere to help you understand how loading into the ground can transform the way you swing the golf club.

Why the Ground Matters in Your Swing

Every great golf swing starts from the ground up.

Your feet, legs, and hips don’t just support you — they generate the energy that becomes clubhead speed.

If you’re not loading properly into the ground, you’re leaving power behind… and your mobility and sequencing suffer.

This drill helps you feel the right movements without overthinking them.

The Drill: Load, Feel, and Rotate

All you need is an alignment stick or a mid-iron.

1. Press Into the Ground

Place the stick or club in front of you and gently press it down toward the ground.

This creates awareness through your hips and helps the upper body stay quiet while the lower body starts the movement.

2. Load Into the Right Side

Flex your right knee slightly and feel your body load into your right glute.

This is the same athletic loading position you should feel at the top of the backswing.

3. Load Into the Left Side

Shift and flex the left knee, activating the left glute.

You’ll feel the energy traveling through your legs and core — exactly what you need through impact.

What You Should Feel

✔️ Glutes firing and stabilizing the movement

✔️ Hips gaining mobility

✔️ Upper body staying centered and quiet

✔️ Energy traveling from the ground upward — just like in the golf swing

The more you train this sensation, the easier it becomes to create a powerful, efficient, and consistent golf swing.

Bring It to the Course

When you walk onto the tee box, remember this feeling.

Pressure into the ground.

Load into your trail side.

Rotate through to your lead side.

That’s how you build a swing that holds up under pressure — and produces the kind of shots you want to hit.
