When it comes to building a consistent and powerful golf swing, spine angle plays a crucial role. A neutral spine and solid posture at setup not only make it easier to rotate, but also help create more efficient movement patterns throughout the swing.
In a recent training session, Coach Joey D and Coach Josh McCumber teamed up with PGA Tour professional Tyler McCumber to demonstrate a simple but effective drill using an alignment stick.
Set Up in Good Posture – Tyler begins by placing the alignment stick along his back while getting into a proper address position.
Create a Neutral Spine – By gently retracting the shoulders and feeling them come back slightly, he establishes a more neutral spine.
Rehearse the Turn – With the shoulders in the right position, Tyler takes the club, sets up in that neutral posture, and makes a smooth turn back and through.
This drill helps players feel the difference between slouched posture and true neutral spine. By reinforcing better setup positions, it naturally leads to a more efficient turn and improved sequencing.
Neutral Spine = Better Rotation: A strong spine angle creates the foundation for an unrestricted turn.
Improved Posture = More Consistency: Small changes in setup posture can dramatically improve contact and accuracy.
Simple Drill = Big Results: An alignment stick makes it easy to feel proper positioning without overthinking mechanics.
When the body learns to move correctly, the golf swing becomes smoother, stronger, and more reliable.
Next time you hit the range, grab an alignment stick and try this drill. Focus on keeping your shoulders retracted, your spine neutral, and your posture strong. With practice, you’ll notice better rotation, improved ball striking, and a more consistent swing.
