Fix Your Golf Posture: The Spine Angle Drill Every Golfer Should Know

October 02, 20252 min read

When it comes to building a consistent golf swing, setup is everything. Too often, golfers step up to the ball with poor posture—rounded spine, hips out of position, and no real stability to start the swing. That’s why Coaches Joey D and Josh McCumber are breaking down one of the simplest but most effective posture drills you can do before every round.

Why Spine Angle Matters

Your spine angle at address is the foundation of your swing. If your posture is off, it doesn’t matter how good your swing mechanics are—your body will always be compensating. Rounded shoulders, an arched back, or a tilted pelvis can rob you of power and accuracy. A strong, neutral spine angle creates balance, stability, and the ability to turn more efficiently.

The Shaft Drill for Better Setup

Here’s the drill Joey D demonstrates in the video:

  1. Grab a shaft or club. Place it along your back.

  2. Find three touch points. The shaft should connect at your tailbone, spine, and head.

  3. Check for gaps. If the shaft isn’t touching one of those points, you’re rounded or out of alignment.

  4. Lock it in. Once you feel those three points in line, drop the club back down into your setup position.

That’s it—you’re now in a strong, athletic posture ready to make a powerful, repeatable swing.

Build Consistency from the Ground Up

This drill is quick, effective, and something you can use on the range or even at home. By starting with the right posture, you’ll find it easier to keep your balance, turn more efficiently, and hit the ball with greater consistency.

📌Pro Tip: Don’t just think about this drill as a one-time fix. Make it part of your pre-shot routine until it becomes second nature.
