Find Your Balance and Power Like the Pros

October 08, 20252 min read

When it comes to your golf swing, two things separate the best players in the world from the rest of the pack: balance and separation. In today’s tip, Coach Joey D and Coach Josh McCumber break down how to use the ground more effectively and train your body to move like a tour player.

Why Balance Matters

Every great swing starts from the ground up. If you’re not connected to the ground, you can’t create the kind of force that leads to real power. Coach Joey D demonstrates a simple move to help your brain understand balance and body awareness — standing on one leg.

Start by balancing on your left leg and lifting your right leg slightly off the ground. Then switch sides. This drill trains your brain and body to communicate, teaching you how to stay stable and centered throughout your swing.

Adding Separation for More Power

Once you’ve found your balance, it’s time to take it up a notch with separation.

Here’s the move: while standing tall and balanced, bring your leg to the left and your club to the right.

This creates opposition — one of the most powerful forces in a golf swing. When your upper and lower body can move independently but in sync, you unlock better sequencing, consistency, and clubhead speed.

Watch any tour pro, and you’ll see how they create this kind of tension and release. It’s the secret behind that effortless power we all admire.

The Ground-Up Connection

Using the ground properly is one of the most overlooked aspects of the golf swing.

By starting with balance and then layering in separation, you’ll learn to push against the ground, store energy, and release it through the ball with more control and speed.
